Breath test procedure

Breath test procedure is very simple. Test is non-invasive and during the test a patient doesn't experience any discomfort. Since isotope breath test with stable carbon labeled urea is absolutely safe it can be used for everybody including children, elderly people, pregnant and lactating women.

1. As a rule the test is carried out in the morning after the night fasting. Before the test beginning a patient takes 200 ml of orange, grapefruit or other juice.
2. 10 min later a patient breathes out into a special collector.
3. A patient drinks water solution of labelled preparation. To detect the H. pylori bacterium one shoud take 13C-urea.

4. 30 min after urea administration the other breath is taken into the second collector.

Notes. During the other breath tests the time and quantity of breath samples collection are determined by the specific instructions. E.g., for aminopyrine breath test on liver insufficiency breath samples are taken every 20-30 min during 2-4 hours.. Ò
5. 13Ñ/12Ñ isotope ratio is determined.

Factors which can interfere with breath test results

False-negative result can be caused by:
- acid antisecretory agents and antibiotics administration during the last 30 days before the test ;
- administration of bismuth containing preparation during the last 30 days before the test;
- administration of protone-pump inhibitors (omeprazole, pantoprozole, etc.) during the last 14 days before the test;
- non-fasting (a patient shouldn't eat for the last 6 hours before the test);
- stomach resection.

False-positive result can be caused by:
- stomach resection accompanied by growth of non-H.pylori bacteria;
- achlorhydria.

Patient physical activity can also effect the breath test results, so he/she should sit motionlessly during the whole test.
